The 2011 Banchory Bangle
Malcolm has been making a Banchory Bangle since 1976 when he first engraved a bangle at the Banchory Show to be sold at the end of the day to raise funds for Children 1st. To celebrate 21 years in Scotland (1990) he created his first gold bangle, engraved with swans, which was auctioned. Now the bangle is raffled each year, raising more money for the charity and allowing everyone the chance of winning an example of his work. Themes for the bangle are chosen from local flora and fauna, and often have personal meaning to Malcolm.
The 2011 bangle is carved and engraved with acorns and oak leaves.
“While living at Crathes, by Banchory, I knew Philip Littlejohn and his family. He was a forester for Crathes Castle. He would show me the oaks that he had planted in the grounds and there was a young oak tree growing on the boundary of my railway station property. I have seen huge ancient oaks since early childhood – climbed them, crawled inside them and now at Grandtully we have ancient oak trees. It is a joy to be with them and watch the acorns grow into three leaf saplings. Hence the Acorn and Oak Leaf Bangle.”
First Prize: Gold Banchory Bangle and Silver Copy
Second Prize: Silver Copy Bangle
Third Prize: £100 Gift Voucher towards an Appleby Piece

Malcolm Appleby is an internationally known engraver who is generally regarded as one of the most original working in contemporary metal today. His work ranges from the sculptural table centrepiece collection for Bute House, the residence of Scotland’s First Minister to the tiny detailed silver buttons that have almost become his trademark (and which adorn many a kilt jacket). Constant experimentation adds an element of the adventurer to his work – whether it is pushing the boundaries of silversmithing techniques or creating new pieces of jewellery inspired by his many interests and influences. The results are highly individual and often reflect his colourful personality and sense of humour.
“The simplest and least expensive pieces should have the same inspirational quality as my most valued major works. Works of art should be made for everyone to enjoy. Engraving is central to my design and art; it is from engraving that my other skills have evolved.”
